Piriformis Syndrome - What is It?
Piriformis Syndrome is a
state where you suffer from buttock pain if you have injured or damaged your piriformis muscle. These muscles
are located under your gluteus maximus, deep in the buttocks. Due to Piriformis Syndrome your buttock area
can suffer from a kind of numbness. It, however, can cause greater problem and the pain can move down to your
thighs and feet. Piriformis is located close to your sciatic nerve, which happens to be the longest and
biggest nerves. It starts in the back and moves down to your legs.
If the piriformis muscle gets damaged or
injured, the sciatic nerve can get affected, resulting in pain in any area from the buttocks to your feet.
Generally piriformis is situated right over the sciatic nerve. This, however, is not the same in all cases.
At times it moves directly through your muscle. Due to a number of factors, like, poor posture, injury and so
on, the sciatic nerve will get compresses by the muscle. If this happens, you will suffer from pain in your
butt, ands also discomfort and numbness down your feet.
It might be difficult to determine if you are
suffering from buttock pain due to sciatica or piriformis syndrome. Symptoms of both of them are quite
similar. It includes a pain that you feel deep inside your buttocks, or on the upper part of your thigh. You
may also feel a pain that may travel right down your feet. Pain moving down the legs can be experienced. The
pain may cause numbness in the legs and buttocks, though it is not necessary. Even if you stand or sit in one
area for a short time it can result in buttock pain. If you are suffering from such problems you need to
consult a physical therapist who will suggest you some exercises.
There are many exercises that can relieve you
from the problem, and does not require you having special equipments for the purpose. They can be easily
performed by you at home. These exercises will help relive the pressure from your sciatic nerve which
generally gets damaged or compressed in cases of piriformis syndrome. Ultrasound and hydrotherapy massage may
also be suggested. Taking some anti-inflammatory medicines can be of help. The medicine you will be suggested
depends on the intensity of your pain. If your discomfort keeps on growing, an injection might be used.
Consult your doctor without delay, so that you can be prescribed the right treatment, and get rid of your
pain at the earliest.
